Location of Project: Neighborhood of Gracias A Dios, Sta Rita, Yoro
Project Justification: Why do you need the project?
To prevent residents of the community from the current situation of using the restroom in the “free air”. To prevent the spread and contamination of diseases in our community.
Supervisor’s Note: Many of these families do not currently have a latrine in their home or the current latrine is made of plastic, tarp or other unsecure materials. The creation of solid concrete block structure will provide for greater privacy, security, and hygiene.
General Objective: What do you hope to achieve with the project?
To benefit 15 families with collaboration in the construction of 15 latrines to help the families deal with local contamination. To educate the community on proper hygiene and provide assistance to the materially-poor people of our community.
Beneficiaries: Who and how many will continually benefit from this project?
15 families of the community (a total of 88 people).
Supervisor’s Note: One of the beneficiaries of this project (Petronila Ramirez, age 78) lost her daughter and sole-provider to breast cancer in December of 2015. She is left with very low-income and the responsibility of the care of her three grandchildren. Thankfully, the community leadership and members in addition to the church of Gracias a Dios have recognized the need and independently decided to provide all necessary labor for the construction of a pila (by local church) and latrine (by the community in general) for this tragic situation.
The local government is providing all sand ($460).
The community will provide one bag of cement and one pvc elbow per beneficiary in addition to the mason’s payment and assistant labor for Petronila ($110).
The local church will provide door hinges and latches ($55).
The beneficiary families will provide the septic hole, payment for mason, assistant’s labor, and stone ($3,030).
The remaining materials (cement, rebar, toilets, pipes, roofs, hardware, etc) are solicited from an outside donor.
