Clean water is an important component of Heart to Honduras’ Food for the Hungry programs. Many areas of Honduras are forced to rely on contaminated water supplies, and the prevalence of waterborne diseases like cholera is increasing. Mosquitoes that carry malaria and dengue fever are also a problem. According to water.org in addition to the health issues it creates, poor access to water also causes overall development to stagnate. Many women and children in the rural areas of Honduras spend up to six hours each day simply fetching water and carrying it home on their heads.
A healthy water intake can help us in many ways.
- You think better. A fully hydrated brain actually works better.
- Strength increases. Muscles work better when they are fully hydrated?
- Immunity – immune system can function better.
- Flush junk out of the body. A fully hydrated body is better at getting rid of the things it doesn’t need.
- Adequate amounts of water = More energy.
Advice from experts vary but it is generally agreed that the average person probably needs to take in 2 liters of water per day. Check with your physician before changing your intake though.
In areas where the water supply is limited or tainted Heart to Honduras desires to partner with the local churches and communities in an effort to alleviate water issues.
