La Ceibita Health Fair

Puppet teaches teeth brushing

For this year’s Sister Church visit from the Lincoln, Nebraska Lutheran church to the Brazos Abiertos church in La Ceibita, the team conceived a different plan.  Over the past six years the visiting team has held a medical clinic.  This year they decided to do some preventive education and to that end they organized a Health Fair.  Over one hundred men and women, teens, and boys and girls, came through the dozen or so booths that were manned by a combination of North Americans and Hondurans.

Participants were given a “ticket” to carry around to each booth.  After they visited each booth, that visit was checked off on the ticket so they could keep track of where they had been.   Mothers received a canvas tote in which to accumulate supplies and each child was given a baggie to wear around their neck in which to keep their prizes.

Booths taught proper hand washing and teeth brushing, the importance of coughing into one’s sleeve, how to prevent the spread of intestinal worms, the necessity of immunizations, healthy eating with the 5 food groups, hydration during bouts of vomiting/diarrhea, electrical safety and wound care.

Sponsor a Child!

Children in Honduras Available for Sponsorship through Compassion International

Katie Byrne's son Dillon and their sponsored child - Kati!

Is your name Edward or Douglas? Maybe even Miguel (or Michael)?

Is your birthday (or your child’s or grandchild’s?) November 15 or November 13 or February 6?

If you answered “yes” to one of these questions, there are 3 little boys who have something in common with you. Yet, they are different from you in that these 3 boys need sponsors in the Compassion International program in order to receive adequate food, clean water, medical care, education, and spiritual nurture.

Your tax-deductible contribution to Compassion International of just $38 a month will connect your sponsored child with a loving, church-based child sponsorship program that provides food and clean water, medical care, educational opportunities, and important life-skills training.

Most importantly, your sponsored child will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. As you exchange letters, send photos and offer encouragement in Jesus’ name, your love will bring hope to a child that will last a lifetime.

Click HERE to go to the HTH sponsorship page. Under  ”Option #2″, click on any of the Compassion International links, and you will see the children available for sponsorship at the 2 locations closest to HTH headquarters in Honduras. These children are in Peña Blanca and La Concepción – because of their proximity to HTH, we could take you on a 4-day Vision Trip to meet and interact with your child. Please call Steve DeLisle  937 408 0027 to discuss pricing for such a trip.

Kate Rene Eichenberg

Birth Announcement!

Allison Kast Eichenberg and her husband Jim welcomed

Kate Rene Eichenberg on September 27, 2011.

Kate’s mom, Allison, served with HTH many years as coordinator for our Quest/Ambassador program.  Currently, Kate’s Aunt Jenny is on staff as Coordinator of our ministry with orphanages in Honduras.

Carol Lynne Usher Retiring

After serving as an HTH staff member for 10 years, and ministering together with Jim for 22 years in various ways with HTH, Carol Lynne has announced her retirement, effective November 17, 2011. Carol Lynne has served as Prayer Coordinator, Newsletter Editor, Sponsor Liaison for the School of Discipleship, and  as a leader for North American teams going to Honduras.

Her husband Jim Usher, a pastor for 27 years, has served on the HTH Board since the beginning in 1989, and for many of those years also served on the staff as coordinator of the team calendar and leader for North Americans traveling to Honduras. Jim took a sabbatical to work on his doctorate, which he earned in 2009, and then officially retired.

In the immediate future, the Ushers have two big writing projects which they are finishing: a biography of HTH founder Charlie Smith, and a book of letters Carol Lynne’s parents exchanged in their four-year courtship during WWII.

In Carol Lynne’s letter to staff, she borrowed a quote from John Burrough when she wrote, “I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.”
