This intestinal disturbance can result from ingestion of a variety of different organisms that are present in contaminated food or water, or transmitted by unwashed hands. This is not an uncommon illness among group members and varies in severity from person to person. Most cases are treated effectively with an anti-diarrheal medication and do not disturb the traveler’s entire week. Heart to Honduras workers do their best to insure proper selection, handling and preparation of food for those visiting the country, but we cannot guarantee that you will not have a case of diarrhea. Consult your health care provider for treatment options.
You can greatly lower your risk for diarrhea by following these guidelines:
- Keep your hands CLEAN and away from your mouth and face. Carry antibacterial hand-wipes and/or hand sanitizer
- Do not eat questionable foods nor buy food from street vendors. Carry some granola or dried fruit with you for snaking. Peel fresh fruit yourself.
- Drink only bottled water (provided by the ministry).
- Carbonated soda in the can or bottle is considered safe to drink. Wipe the lip of the can before opening.
- If you are taken to a restaurant for a meal it will be one chosen to serve you safe food, water and ice.
