Jesus spent a lot of time taking care of hungry people. He fed thousands of people when they followed Him. He spent quite a few evenings at dinner with friends and others that invited Him. He understood the powerful connection that is made when we break bread together. HTH Founder Charlie Smith knew the importance of feeding people, but he also came to understand the greater good of creating community by eating together. It is not by chance that the dining hall is the center of life in Canchias.
Beyond feeding people, Heart to Honduras wants to help them learn how to improve their diet through better agriculture practices and new crops. Much of our Canchias property is devoted to model farming as many of the people we minister to live as subsistence farmers. We have developed tilapia ponds, an egg operation and a dairy farm. We’ve cultivated fields of corn, bananas, coffee and other crops. Through our farms not only are people being fed, but they are learning how to produce more food on their own land.
An example of how the dairy farm is helping the local community:
- As we develop the idea of a farm training center the operation will be used as a model of how others can set up a dairy farm of their own.
- Milk, cheese, yogurt and butter are made and distributed not only for our own purposes (feeding School of Discipleship students, staff and group members) but also a portion is given to local schools to help aid in the nutrition of the children.
