15 Pilas Santa Rita

Official Project Solicitation

Department of Community Development

Project Name: 15 Pilas

Date Submitted: February 2016

Name of Solicitor: Local Water Council

Location of Project: Neighborhood of Col. Gracias a Dios, Sta Rita, Yoro

Project Justification: Why do you need the project?

As low-income community, many of our residents do not have permanent job. We do not currently have the economic capacity to build pilas to store water for daily personal use. Frequent water shortages often affect our people who have nowhere to store the water.

Supervisor’s Note: A pila is a simple concrete water storage basin. These basin’s allow a family to practice basic hygiene, wash dishes, and maintain an adequate amount of water to weather common temporary water shortages. Water shortages are common in Honduras and these basins allow families to endure days when running water may not arrive to their home.

General Objective: What do you hope to achieve with the project?

We wish to bless 15 families with 15 pilas so they may storage the water and avoid water shortages around the community. This will help with unnecessary waste of water and prevent drainage in the streets.

Supervisor’s Note: When properly maintained, pilas greatly help combat issues of mosquito-borne illnesses. A common issue in many materially-poor community is standing water in ditch-lines due to improper usage of water. Families without pilas often allow water to freely run and stand in nearby ditches. This causes an abundance of mosquitos and increases incidences of dangerous illnesses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.

Development Strategies How are you planning to execute the project?

  1. Assure that all legal documents are in order.

  2. Socialize (explain and present) this project with: The municipality and community

  3. Utilize local resources like: Labor hand and stone

  4. Seek the support of: Community and church

  5. The project will be executed under the supervision of the Department of Community Development.

Beneficiaries: Who and how many will continually benefit from this project?

15 families (a total of 83 people).

Supervior’s Note: One of the beneficiaries of this project (Petronila Ramirez, age 78) lost her daughter and sole-provider to breast cancer in December of 2015. She is left with very low-income and the responsibility of the care of her three grandchildren. Thankfully, the community leadership and members in addition to the church of Gracias a Dios have recognized the need and independently decided to provide all necessary labor for the construction of a pila (by local church) and latrine (by the community in general) for this tragic situation.

Collaboration:

  • The local government is providing sand for concrete ($270).

  • The community provides material left from a previous project ($140).

  • The local church will provide 2” PVC pipes in addition to masonry and assistant’s labor for Petronila’s pila ($130).

  • The beneficiary families will provide stone for the foundation in addition to masonry and assistant's labor ($1020).

  • The remaining construction materials are requested from an outside donor.

TOTAL AMOUNT requested from outside donor $1660
